Setting Up Digital Products Using Cubecart And Cpanel File Manager

Setting up downloadable digital products is slightly different from physical goods, mainly because before you add the product to cubecart you need to make sure that the downloadable file is on your site first so the customer can get it after buying.

So first we need to upload the product to your site. In this tutorial we will do that using your 2001 web hosting control panel.

In this example we will set up a downloadable ebook but the method is the same for any downloadable document, sound file or programme.

Step 1

First we recommend that you place the download inside a zip file. The reason for this is that if you are selling a program for example virus programs on your clients pc may block the download of .exe files. Not only this but zipping a file makes it smaller and quicker for download.

If you dont have a zip program you can get a good free one here

Step 2 Uploading your downloadable product ready for download

Ok so now we have our downloadable file inside a zip file we need to get it put on your site ready for download. Follow these steps to do that.

  1. Log into your web hosting control panel which will be here http://www.YOURSITE.com/cpanel
  2. Once logged in look for the section titled "files" and click the file manager link. This will open a new window showing the file structure of your site.
  3. Now in that list click on THE WORDS "create new folder"
  4. Over on the top right of the screen a text box will appear. Type in there "downloads"  (without the speech marks) and click the "create" button.
  5. The list on the right will refresh and you will see your new downloads folder.
  6. Now click the folder icon next to the new downloads directory. It is important you click the folder icon and not the word download as we are trying to navigate insde that folder not just select it.
  7. At the top of the page you should now see "/ dowloads / (Current Folder)"
  8. Now we need to upload your zip file to the downloads directory. Let's say for argument this one is called ebook1.zip (this will be what ever you named your zip file when you made it. So click the words "Upload file(s)"
  9. You will now see lots of browse buttons.Click the first one and a new window will pop up allowing you to locate the ebook zip on your computer. When you find it click it once to select it, then click the "open" button.
  10. Now click the upload button to upload the zip file to your downloads folder.

The page will refresh and you should now see your zip file in the list of files.

STEP 3 Adding the downloadable product to cubecart

Ok so now we have the downloadable file on the site we need to set it up in cubecart, this is slightly different from adding a normal product so just follow these steps.

  1. Log into your cubecart admin area and click "add product"
  2. Fill out the add product form just like you would for a normal product with the description etc this is just the same until you get to the "Product type" option.
  3. For product type select "digital" a new text box will now appear. Here we have to enter the path to the downloadable product. Here is what you need to enter there I will tell you how to change thsi in a moment

    /home/Your Cpanel User Name/downloads/filename.zip

Where you see the red text you need to enter your cpanel user name. This is the user name you use to access your hosting control panel. The green text wants chanmging to the exact name of the file they will download, for example ebook1.zip

You MUST include the first / symbol.

Finally click add product and you are done.

If all this confuses you then you can always put in a work request by ticket and we will add your digital product for you for a small fee per product normally around £3. We will set up the product and the download then you can go back and type in the description etc.

If you are selling a lot of digital products we strongly suggest you learn to do this yourself.
