| We are often asked what are the three fields at the end of cubecart add product or add site document pages?? Many clients aren't sure so either don't fill these sections in or fill them in incorrectly.
I can not stress enough how important these fields are, in a nut shell they are the difference between your site appearing on page 1099 of a search engines results or on the first page.
I am not promising that filling out these sections correctly will get you to the top of the search engines but it WILL place you much higher in the reults than if you do not understand.
Let's do this step by step and in plain English.
What Is SEO? SEO is an acronym for Search Engine optimization. In plain English optimizing your site to make it as easy as possible for search engines to read your info pages and product pages.
The good news is if you use cubecart then your site is already fully optimized as long as you complete the little sections at the end of the add product or add site document pages correctly then you do not need to worry any more about SEO.
Let's Look At The Three SEO fields when you add a site document. I will first explain them so you know what they are then tell you how to fill them in.
Browser Title (sometimes called meta title) Look at the VERY TOP of this page in your browser window, you are looking for the blue bar at the very very top opf your screen you will see the words

That is the meta title, it is very simply the FULL title of the product or information page
How To Fill It In Correctly.
As you know we go to site documents and click add new link. The first thing we will do is fill in the normal sections
Document name: The short version for your left nav on your site in this case we might type "Jewelry Care" Page Content : Obviously now you enter your page content.
Then we come to the "Search Engine Friendly URL Meta Data For Site Document" section let's fill that out.
Browser Title This is the document name plus a little further clarification. We have quite a bit of room in that blue browser bar so we want to make this a sentence rather than two words. So start with the page name then expand on it, so we type
Jewelry Care how to care for and clean gold and silver jewelry using regular household products.
See what we did here? We simply expanded the title to give a little more detail on the page content.
Meta Description Put simply this is the short paragraph of text you would see under a link in search engine results Look at the result you get if you type CNN into Google
CNN.com - Breaking News, U.S., World, Weather, Entertainment ...
CNN.com delivers the latest breaking news and information on the latest top stories, weather, business, entertainment, politics, and more.
See how Google grabbed the Browser title for the link? That's why we give a little more detail
Then Beneath is the Meta Description. It is quite simply a short paragraph of descriptive text describing the page content.
How To Fill It In Correctly. This is nice and easy copy and paste the first paragraph of your page content into this box. Using that method has helped us get many of our own sites onto the first page of Google.
Meta Keywords: (Comma Separated) This is a list of keywords or short phrases that are relevent to the content of the page.
How To Fill It In Correctly. For our jewelry care page we might put
jewelry care,gold care,silver care,cleaning jewelry,cleaning gold, cleaning silver,clean jewelry easily,
No need togo mad here a list of 5 to 10 words or very dhort phrases will be fine. Notice that the words/phrases are separated only with a comma not with spaces you can have spaces within the phrase but not between phrases.
That's it for site documents
SEO fields for products
Very similar to the SEO for documents but obviously we need to tailor the information to the product. Why do we want to do this? If you do it correctly then your product pages will show up in search engine results not only your home page. That equals ultra targeted traffic in otherwords someone who wants to buy exactly what you are selling so this is well worth your time as you add your products.
For this example we will add a pair of Nike Golf Shoes to our site
Product title at top of page might be Leather Nike Golf Shoes then of course we fill out the product description the price and all the other usual details.
Now to the SEO Fields
Browser Title: White Leather Nike Golf Shoes complete with spikes and free shoe laces free carrying case.
Again just a little more info on top of the product name and a few terms people may search for in search engines. See how that would work? Someone could search for Leather Nike Golf Shoes or Golf Shoes With Spikes both those searches are covered in the page title.
Meta Description:
The first paragraph of your product description can be pasted in here.
Meta Keywords: (Comma Separated)
golf shoes,nike golf shoes,leather golf shoes,golf shoes with spikes,nike leather golf shoes,
A FEW RULES
NEVER fake SEO info to try and attract visitors to your site. All these fields MUST be relevent to the page or product, faking page titles to try and get visitors will have the opposite effect, the visitor will get to your site see that the link did not point to what they were interested in and leave IMMEDIATELY and will probably never come back.
REMEMBER search engines use a combination of all three of these fields PLUS your actual page content when trying to establish how relevent your page is to a search on their engine. Currently they pay A LOT of attention to the meta title and meta description. They will pay more attention to the meta title than your product title.
In Closing Take the extra time to complete these sections when adding products or site documents THEY MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE in search engine placement of your pages and products which ultimately makes a big difference to the number of visitors your site gets and the sales you make.
