What is a SSL certificate?
SSL web server certificates are used to secure and authenticate web sites, thereby ensuring safe electronic commerce across the Internet. They are used when collecting sensititve information to give your site users confidence their information can not be seen by others.

How does SSL certificate work?
The SSL certificate, once "applied" to your web site, allows the web server and the web browser to encrypt the data that's transmitted between them.

Do I need an SSL certificate?
This depends. Iff for example you have a shopping site and your user transfers to a third party payment processor like Paypal or 2checkout.com then no not really. The reason being that most third party processors including the two above have their own security certificates so bythe time it comes to entering secure information like credit card numbers the user is seeing a secure page.

However if you wish to use Paypals "paypal pro" service then yes you will need to secure your site.
