KEEP REGULAR BACKUPS!! READ THIS FIRST!!!!!

It is important that no matter what kind of site you are running that you keep regular and multiple backups of your site.

Remember that web servers are just powerful, giant computers that get a LOT of use. Like with your PC a server hard drive or some other piece of hardware can crash or stop working.

If you keep regular backups of your site, and a server you host on is attacked by hackers, or some part of the server hardware fails, you have a recent copy of your site to re-install. This will greatly minimize the time that your site is down. Would you really want to rebuild your site from scratch???

The same applies to database backups. If you run programs like link directories or mailing list programs on your site or have an ecommerce shopping site, you not only need to backup your sites files but the databases that run your programs as well. Keep multiple and regular backups of EVERYTHING!

Do not assume that your web host automatically keeps a backup of your site. 2001 web does not keep backups of client sites unless they subscribe to our backup service.

Some servers have automatic "raid" back ups. We chose not to use this system for the following reason:

Raid is very simply a real time mirror copy of a servers main drive. If for example a hacker were to get access to a server and upload damaging scripts, those scripts would also be copied to the raid backup drive, which kind of defeats the object.

We believe the best way to deal with backups is to keep regular backups on your pc. In addition make sure you copy them to a cd remember your computer can crash too.
