Search Engine Submission And Directory Submission

One of the first steps for any website should be to let the major search engines know of their existence. While none of the major search engines give any guarantee of listings letting them know you exist can shorten the time it takes for them to spider and index your site.

First Step

Submit your site to the major search engines free by Clicking Here IMPORTANT!!! Just use the basic free service which is the major search engines. If you use their paid service they will submit you to all sorts of directories and ffa sites which can damage your rankings.
Paid Submission

We are sure you have seen the ads

We will submit your site to 8000 search engines and directories for $30

Here is the golden rule. 99.9% of the time DO NOT use these services. First of all there are not 8000 major search engines there are 40 at best. These services will submit your site to the major search engines, a few decent directories and thousands of FFA (Free For All) link sites.

FFA link sites will certainly not bring you visitors as they are just long rotating pages of unorganized links. Will they improve your visibility in the search engines eyes? Quite the opposite being listed on them will more than likely result in your site being banned from a search engine (excluded from being indexed). Search engines see FFA sites as being search engine spamming, they don't like it and you should not associate your site with them. We can almost guarantee that if you look carefully at 99.9% of the submission services they will openly admit that they will submit your site to FFA directories.

How Often Should You Submit?
Not more than once a month there is no need. If you have made your site search engine friendly and you actively exchange decent links (see link exchange section) the search engines will regularly find and re-index your site from links on other sites.

Submitting To Directories
Believe it or not, not all traffic comes from search engines. Legitimate directories are an excellent source of traffic.

First make sure you are listed int he mother of all direcories Dmoz you can get info on that by Clicking Here

Then you should begin by finding directories specific to your site, it isn't hard. If for example you sell Jewelry, search Yahoo or Google for "jewelry directories" you will find thousands of sites who do nothing but list jewelry sites. Some will be free, some will require a link back, and some will ask for a small amount of money for a premium listing.

Do not underestimate these directories they are an excellent source of ongoing traffic. Spend some time listing in them.

What Should I Look For In A Directory?
Basically organization. A good directory will have clearly laid out categories and a search function. Look round the site as if you were a surfer looking to buy a specific piece of jewelry. Is it easy to use? If it is list in it. If it is covered with annoying pop ups give it a miss, chances are if it bugs you it will bug surfers and they too will leave.

We think like this. You have a jewelry site. You search any of the major engines for "jewelry" your site is not in the top 10. So what makes sense? Get your site advertised on the sites that ARE in the top 10.
