Making Text Into A Clickable Link

There are two main reasons for making text into a link.

  1. To take the user to another page either on your site or another site
  2. To start download of a file.

We have all seen links within a main page like the following

For more information click here or download click here

Here is a lesson on how you do that in your documents in cubecart.

1. Log into your admin section

2. Click Site documents then create new

Linking To Another Page

Let's make a start, for this example let's imagine we are telling someone about Google and we want them to see it for themselves.

Star by typing some text to turn into a link. So type the words " If you have never used it you can visit Google here".

Now we will make the words "you can visit Google here" into a clickable link. It is always much beter to be descriptive with the link text, this tells search engines EXACTLY what a link is pointing at whereas if we just made the words "click here" into a link that could be anything.

1. Place your mouse at the start of the word"visit" hold down the left mouse button and drag the cursor over all four words "you can visit Google here" the text will be highligted with a black or blue background. Now let go of the mouse button the text should still be highlighted.

2. Look at the buttons above the text input area and find the little image that looks like a link normally a little image of a chain

3. Click that image and a new window will pop up

4. In the link Type box make sure "url" is selected this tells the web page that we are linking to another page.

5. Now click inside the url box and type http://www.google.com (this could also be another page on your own site it does not have to be another site)

If you were to click the OK button then save your edits the link will now lead to google.

Linking to a file for download

Sometimes we ma want to offer a file for download on our sites. The BEST way to do this is collect all the files you want to offer for download and place them in a zip file. To create a zip file you will need a zip program we recommend winzip you can download that here.

Once you have your zip file created you need to upload it to your site either using an ftp program or file manager in your hosting control panel.

When the file has been uploaded you simply follow the procedure above but insert the full Url to the file you uploaded eg

http://www.YOURSITE.com/SOMEFOLDER/YOURFILE.zip

Once the users browser sees that the link is to a zip file instead of taking them to another page it will open the download dialgue allowing them to download the file.

Opening a link in a new window

This is usually only done when you are linking to a page on another site and you do not want the visitor to lose your site. To make a link open in a new window we have to add what is called a target attribute.

This is done exactly like linking text above however when the little window pops up asking you where you are linking to look for the "target" section and make sure it is set to "_new" (this may be under the adavanced tab in some text editors.

NOTE: Links WILL NOT work in most text editor windows, however when you save your edits the link WILL be clickable on your site for your visitors.
